The Society is proud of its contribution to the greyhound racing industry and grateful to the many clubs and volunteers who worked tirelessly over many decades to establish Dapto Dogs as a household name known around the globe.
  • What happened in the Greyhound Racing dispute?
Following the NSW State Government’s unsuccessful attempt to ban greyhound racing in NSW and the ACT in 2016, there was significant industry reform. In April 2019, as part of a state-wide redistribution, Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW), proposed a change to the timeslot of racing at Dapto from Thursday nights to Saturday with a reallocation from SKY1 to SKY2 and a reduction in annual race meetings. The Society did not agree with the proposed timeslot change as it would impact other users of the showground, including the Dapto Rugby League Football Club, weekly markets, bingo and various events and functions. GRNSW agreed to keep the current arrangement in place. In August 2019, GRNSW provided all greyhound racing clubs, including the Society, with a three-year funding agreement to supersede existing annual arrangements. In addition, an updated Greyhound Media Services (GMS) agreement reassigning royalty rights from the Society to GRNSW was proposed. The Society did not consider the new terms acceptable because, in the Society’s view, they did not provide certainty over the Thursday night timeslot or reflect the increased costs associated with operating at the Dapto showground which is not public or state-owned. Negotiations were unsuccessful. On 31 October 2019, the Society’s greyhound racing club registration lapsed and on 6 November 2019, the Society’s Board made the difficult decision to cease greyhound racing at the showground. After the announcement of the Board’s decision, a legal dispute arose between GRNSW and the Society, including court proceedings. The legal dispute and proceedings were resolved pursuant to a confidential commercial settlement between GRNSW and the Society that included GRNSW licensing the racetrack from the Society.

  • Is the Tap House part of the future vision?
Yes, in December of 2021, following two years of the COVID19 pandemic, and associated delays in future planning activities, the Society re-purposed an area of the site to launch the Tap House. The Tap House consisted of two old sheds that have been lovingly re-purposed into functions spaces.
