Exciting New Partnership Proposed for The Groundz

Dapto Agricultural & Horticultural Society Ltd, trading as The Groundz, has lodged a Development Application with Wollongong City Council seeking approval for an exciting new partnership with McKinnon’s Dog Wash & Grooming.

Following the cessation of greyhound racing operations in September 2025, the former kennel block at The Groundz became available for adaptive reuse. Recognising the opportunity to activate the purpose built facility, The Groundz undertook a partner selection process and is pleased to announce McKinnon’s as the preferred operator.

James McKinnon and Melissa Moore, operating McKinnon’s Dog Wash & Grooming for over 8 years, have built a strong and loyal client base across the Illawarra region. Upon being selected as the preferred partner, they expressed their enthusiasm for the opportunity.

Melissa Moore said, “We’re excited to breathe new life into the space and give our loyal clients and their dogs an incredible new facility.”

The existing kennel block was purpose built for animal use and is ideally suited to accommodate a high quality dog care offering in the heart of Dapto. The proposal includes professional grooming, doggy daycare and supervised boarding services.

“We’re passionate about providing supreme dog care with a breadth of services locally and bringing something really special to the community,” Melisa said.

Importantly, compared to the former greyhound racing use of the kennel block, the proposed business model will be appointment based and is expected to result in a reduction in overall noise, traffic and parking demand. The proposal represents a lower intensity use while delivering a new and vibrant service to locals.

The business also intends to introduce a dedicated dog bus service for local pick ups and drop offs, providing added convenience for pet owners across the region.

“For us, this is about creating a vibrant, safe and enriching one stop facility for dog owners, and we believe The Groundz is the perfect location to bring that vision to life,” Melisa said.

The Development Application is now with Wollongong City Council for assessment.
